THINGS TO DO IN THE AREA
Hire a bicycle from Hornbill Lodge and explorer the area. Situated in the town the lodge is not far from the Kariba dam wall, observation points and the Mahobekombe Township.
Kariba Town is a very small laid back town on the shores of Lake Kariba with few tourist attractions. The town was established to house workers who were part of the construction of the hydro-electric dam in the mid 1950s. Visitors these days come to soak up the sun and relax or do water based activities on the Lake.
Fishing is the main activity in the area whether fishing for Bream (Tilapia) or the exhilarating Tiger Fish. Boats and tackle can be hired from near by harbours.
Sunset cruises and boat tours on Lake Kariba can be organised with safari operators in the town.
Game drives can also be arranged with businesses in the area, as the town is technically situated in a National Park. Sometimes you don’t even need to book a game drive, as the transfer from the airport can be just as exciting! The wildlife is wide spread and may be found roaming on the side of the road. The locals like to say “we don't have traffic jams we have elephant jams.”
Take a short drive to the Lake’s dam wall, which allows visitors to experience the magnitude of the 128m tall, 579m long structure, completed in 1959. There are many view points of the dam wall and Lake, a particularly spectacular look out point is at the Heights. Located on a hill 600m above the lake The Heights is a suburb of Kariba town with lovely veiws and a collection of little shops and curio stalls. The beautiful Chapel of Santa Barbara built in memory of the workers who died during the construction of the dam is also located at the heights.
